FCT receives calls regularly from people whose carpet has become drenched with water by flooding, water pipes bursting, bathroom leaks etc. Usually, our clients will go through their insurance company to claim for the carpet damage – however, did you know there are a few tips and tricks you can do at home to help to alleviate the damage.
1. Upon finding the wet carpet, immediately spread towels over the area to soak up some of the water. Keep doing this until the towels are completely saturated. You should check underneath the carpet to make sure the carpet padding and the floor aren’t sopping wet as well.
2. If you have a wet vacuum, you should attempt to vacuum the wet carpet. DO NOT use a regular home vacuum – this it NOT the same thing. You should vacuum using a wet vacuum cleaner until you get no more water.
3. Attempt to encourage the moisture to evaporate. Try using hair dryers, household fans, even a dehumidifier. Keep them pointed towards the moisture until the water begins to dry up. You should check under the carpet (if you can) to ensure the carpet padding is not sopping wet too.
The carpet may still not be fully dry and may start to smell. In this instance you should call FCT and we will help to remove water from the carpets and rid the smell.
